Introduction

Trail of Hope Foundation (T.H.F) is a registered Section 21 company and non-profit organization based in Pretoria, South Africa that empowers orphaned and vulnerable children to develop critical consciousness within their context of living. It was founded by Tendai Sean Joe, a former street child, now an international advocate for disadvantaged children and youths.

The ‘Trail’ is a trail of human inspiration created to bring attention to the struggles of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa and suggest sustainable solutions to help transform these children into future leaders of tomorrow. These children arrive in the streets often traumatized due to various reasons. Street life is also traumatic as children are exposed to sexual abuse, child trafficking, drug abuse, gangsterism, prostitution, hunger, violence, disease and poverty. Sniffing glue becomes one of the few escapes from the realities of the oppression suffered and the fear generated by street life. It unfortunately leads to peripheral neuropathy, a crippling condition.

T.H.F seeks to create partnerships with all sectors of society including municipalities, government departments, key policy makers, service providers, the media, international organizations especially orphaned and vulnerable related organizations, institutions such as schools and universities, churches and local community groups. It has been endorsed by London Mayor Dr. Boris Johnson, International humanitarians such as Judy Westwater (Author and Founder of Pegasus Children Fund, U.K), Tom Touhy (Dreams for kids, Chicago, U.S.A) and some public figures across the globe. T.H.F will achieve its goal through partnerships mentioned earlier and by encouraging accountability, relevance and sustainability of projects. In addition, documenting projects for television will also serve the donor community with relevant information either for advocacy or future strategic planning.

Overtime, T.H.F would like to become a philanthropic television show that visits some remote parts of the African continent, filming and documenting projects and thus show givers how their donations are making a difference in the world.

1. Objectives

a) The organisation’s main objectives are empowerment and advocacy for orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa.

b) To turn THF into a philanthropic Television Show, filming and documenting projects in some remote parts of the continent, thereby showing givers how their donations are making a difference in the world.

c) The organisation’s secondary objectives will be:

i. To raise awareness of the plight of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa and Europe. This will be done through a three month motorbike journey, documented throughout using film, photography and social media tools.

ii. To activate the international community against deplorable conditions children endure daily.

iii. To create a platform that highlights the challenges orphaned and vulnerable children face to survive against poverty, trafficking, abuse, crime, institutionalization, disease and recruitment into military conflicts.

iv. To assist the constant generation of fresh approaches to working with and for orphaned and vulnerable children across Africa.

v. To encourage and assist volunteers who wish to offer their skills and time for the benefit of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa.

vi. To implement and support pioneering grass-root programs related to orphaned and vulnerable children in Sub Sahara and eventually the rest of Africa.

vii. Engaging in advanced and informed advocacy on behalf of orphaned and vulnerable children as well as providing strategic advice and consultancy through workshops, presentations and road-shows on the issue of street children for all sectors of society.

viii. Facilitating research and explaining the issue of street children in light of the HIV/AIDS crisis within Sub Sahara and eventually the rest of Africa as well as providing an accessible information base.
